Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has taken a decisive step to ensure that workers receive their due promotions without accumulating arrears. He made this directive during a courtesy visit by the Judges of the State Judiciary, led by Chief Judge Justice Theresa Diai, at the Government House in Asaba.
Governor Oborevwori acknowledged that his administration had already allocated over N600 million monthly, disbursed in increments of N10,000 per worker for three months initially. This was done to ease the impact of the removal of the fuel subsidy on the workforce.
He emphasized the need to address promotion arrears by ensuring timely promotions. The Governor pointed out that when promotions are delayed and payments accumulate over two years, it puts a strain on the government’s resources.
Governor Oborevwori also mentioned the efforts to clear salary arrears inherited from previous administrations. He highlighted that out of the N5.5 billion identified for payment, two tranches had already been disbursed, with the remainder scheduled for completion by November.
He reaffirmed his commitment to an independent and financially autonomous judiciary, underscoring its pivotal role in the swift administration of justice. He recalled his past involvement in advocating for financial autonomy and an extension of the service years for the judiciary during his tenure as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly.
The Governor acknowledged the challenges faced by the judiciary and praised its contributions to the development of the state and the nation as a whole. He expressed support for ongoing capacity-building initiatives and stressed the importance of embracing technological advancements in the legal profession.
Governor Oborevwori also assured that the new ultra-modern high court complex, once completed and equipped, would enhance the morale and productivity of the staff. He disclosed that all necessary resources had been provided to expedite the construction process.
In conclusion, Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude for the visit and wished the judiciary a successful new legal year.
Justice Diai, on behalf of the judges, visited to congratulate the Governor on his electoral victory and success at the Election Petition Tribunal. She also apprised him of the commencement of the 2023/2024 legal year. Justice Diai provided an overview of the State Judiciary’s composition and highlighted the need for additional juvenile centers. She also commended the automation of revenue collection in all courts and assured the Governor of the judiciary’s support in achieving a successful administration.
